The media are starting their countdowns - who were the 100 most influential people of the past 1000 years, what events changed our lives in the last millennium... all the biggest, best and most important.

We at Pigdump like to celebrate the underdog, the small victories in day-to-day life. Here is our first list of not-so-spectacular events of the past 1000 years. Enjoy!

  • 1037: first time a child put shoe-like things on wrong feet
  • 1154: the turnip is celebrated
  • 1199: first century-end popular lute music countdown broadcast live in town square
  • 1376: first noted incident of banging one's funny-bone
  • 1495: first Royal Commission on "that devil weed"
  • 1533: first PMS defence failed
  • 1729: first public display of forgetting to do up one's trousers (coined a new phrase "flying low")
  • 1768: first time a dog is punished for dragging its ass along carpet
  • 1827: girls just wanted to have fun
  • 1874: someone thinks a sequel would be a good thing
  • 1923: after big success during WWI, someone thinks khaki might be fashionable
  • 1951: the word "leverage" is used as a verb for the first time
