The name game, the doppelgänger edition Some of the kids at work were listening to tunes the other day.
"Who's that?" I asked 'em.
"Matthew Sweet," one of them replied
"No it's not, it's the Dave Matthews Band," said another.
"Oh yes, I've heard of them," I tried to sound like I knew about what the kids are into these days. "They're the Canadian band, the guys from British Columbia, eh?"
"Ha, as if! You're thinking of the Matthew Good Band."
"Oh."
I sat quietly for a while, feeling a little like a geezer dumb-ass (that happens a lot when you work with the kids) and waited for the next CD to come on.
"Now that one I know. It's one of those one-named fellas... oh, I know it... it's... it's... geesh, it was easy when everywhere was Sting and Madonna... oh I know, it's Nellie.... no no no... it's Moby!"
"Try again, dumb-ass, Moby's a guy. That's Dido."
So much for being in with the kids and the one-named celebs. Which leads me to the last thing I heard at work that day:
"Hey guys, Jennifer, Jason and I are going to see that Mike Leigh movie, wanna join us?"
There was nothing I could say.
