57 channels (and nothin' on) Long before this Pigdump editor broke new ground on the cutting edge of the way new economy, I watched a lot of television. A whole lot. There were shows that were quite brilliant but didn't cut it with mainstream Vacuumland, like "Best of the West", "Frank's Place" and "Square Pegs" (believe it or not!) Such a shame.
When the technology of videotape recording became affordable for poor post grads like me, I vowed that I would tape everything, especially the shows I knew wouldn't last. Which means I have an interesting collection that includes little gems like "The People Next Door", "Max Headroom" and "The Famous Teddy Z."
I admit, I was one of those annoying clowns who watched "Twin Peaks" from the get-go (dammit, ABC should have let it run its simple 7-episode course rather than extending it a second excruciating season!) I have the first season of "The X-Files" taped from its original airing. And on long weekends at the cottage, I bring my old collection of "WKRP", "The Dick van Dyke Show", "Northern Exposure" (again taped from day one), and my prized possession, "Homicide, Life on the Street."
And now I don't watch anything. Well, besides "Coronation Street" and tapes of Letterman of course. People ask "Why, Trish? You used to be the television junkie, finding all the good shows first." Heh heh... I blush. "There are good things on, you know, The Sopranos, The West Wing, Ed..."
But the thing is, big fat Frankie's big fat head is always in the way and I can't see a thing.
And that's the truth.
