Last weekend, the Pigdump writers, editors and their families arrived at the Pigdump retreat somewhere north of here. It's the annual meeting of the musical minds, the tuning of the souls, the strummin', spoonin', ivory tinklin' festival where we all get down and get back up again.
In this year's summit, these highly lubricated minds made several stunning discoveries. For instance, did you know that if you sing the Village People's "YMCA" and think outside the box for a verse or two, you'll find that Elton John's "Crocodile Rock" can be sung at the same time! Really! The chords are the same, the counter melodies work, I tell ya, it's a real convergence of classical music (along the lines of a David Bowie-Queen collaboration. You know what I'm saying.)
But don't listen to us, try it yourself. Print out these handy lyrics, get a gang of well-oiled folks and sing along:
Young man, there's no need to feel down
(I remember when rock was young)
I said, young man, pick yourself off the ground
(Me and Suzie had so much fun)
I said, young man, 'cause you're in a new town
(Holding hands and skimming stones)
There's no need to be unhappy
(Had an old gold Chevy and a place of my own)
Young man, there's a place you can go
(But the biggest kick I ever got)
I said, young man, when you're short on your dough
(Was doing a thing called the Crocodile Rock)
You can stay there, and I'm sure you will find
(While the other kids were Rocking Round the Clock)
Many ways to have a good time.
(We were hopping and bopping to the Crocodile Rock)
It's fun to stay at the Y.M.C.A. etc. etc.
(La la la la la la etc. etc)
